The Ring Video Doorbell, a video doorbell, and security industry giant, was the result of my video doorbell passion. The Merkury Doorbell required the installation of an existing doorbell, something I didn’t have to do with this one. It was an all-in-one kit. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any preexisting wire from which to power my new video doorbell. Without a preexisting doorbell, I spent a lot of time researching how to hardwire my new Ring Doorbell.
Instead of using an existing doorbell or chime, use an indoor power converter with a transformer to regulate the voltage.
How To Install a Ring Doorbell Without an Existing Doorbell?
No doorbell or chime is required when installing the Ring Video Doorbell.
Installing Ring Doorbell Without Existing Doorbell
If you don’t want to hardwire the Ring doorbell, you may use an indoor power adapter with a voltage regulator to power it instead.
In order to use the Ring doorbell camera, you must have an existing doorbell or chime already installed in your home.
Ring Doorbells Voltage Requirements
If you’re going to install a ring video doorbell, the most critical step is to make sure that the doorbell is getting the power it needs.
Each Ring doorbell has its own set of features. As a convenience, I’ll provide the voltage requirements for each Ring video doorbell below.
Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
The voltage rating required for the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is 8-24 V AC. However, the VA rating goes up to 40A.
Ring Video Doorbell 3
The Ring Video Doorbell 3, identical to the plus model, needs a voltage rating of between 8 and 24 V AC, with the highest permissible VA rating of 40A for proper operation.
Ring Video Doorbell Pro
In contrast to the other products on this list, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro needs a voltage rating of 16-24 V AC.
As a result, since the Ring Pro video doorbell does not include rechargeable batteries, it is unable to take a broader range of voltages than is required.
Ring Video Doorbell 2
The second version of the Ring Video Doorbell can operate with an AC power range of 8 to 24 volts.
Ring Doorbell No Wires Installation Using an Indoor Power Adapter
If your doorbell doesn’t have any wires, you may use an indoor power adapter to connect it to a power source.
Using this simple converter, you can guarantee that your Ring Video Doorbell gets the correct voltage from the wall outlet.
Just put in the Ring doorbell adaptor, and it’s ready to use. It’s a simple plug-and-play solution that you can essentially leave in place with no more action required.
This saves you the trouble of having to install a new transformer, chime box, and wire the whole system from scratch.
A professional transformer installation and wiring would have been much more expensive; nevertheless, I decided to save money by doing it myself.
Due to the same voltage need, the plug-in adapters for the Ring Doorbell 2, Ring Doorbell 3, and Ring Doorbell 3 Plus are identical (8-24 V AC).
Installing Ring Doorbell 2 and 3 Without Existing Doorbell

Due to the exact voltage needs of Ring Doorbell 2, Ring Doorbell 3, and Ring Doorbell 3 Plus, this Plug-in Adapter for Ring Video Doorbells works with all of them.

Extending the Adapter Wire for Your Ring Video Doorbell
When utilizing the indoor power adapter to install the Ring Video Doorbell, I ran into an issue with the adapter wires not reaching the power socket in my home.
For this issue, I bought an extension cable that worked with an identical adaptor. When in doubt about the adapter’s cable length, it’s best to buy an extra one with the adapter, so you don’t have to worry about it later.
Using a Plug-in Chime for Your Ring Video Doorbell
A mechanical or digital chime is often used when installing the Ring video doorbell in conjunction with an existing doorbell.
The Plug-in Chime will suffice for this particular installation. This is a basic mechanical or digital chime replacement.
You can hear the doorbell from anywhere in the home by just plugging in the Ring Chime.

Is Hardwiring The Ring Doorbell Worth It?
Yes, I believe that to be the case. This is due to the fact that I dislike always having to change out batteries.
Though it’s an interesting topic, the answer may depend on whether or not you believe that having two separate batteries and changing them whenever one runs out is bothersome is the best solution.
Using an indoor power adapter eliminates the need to wire your whole system to suit your doorbell, which makes sense if you’re trying to save money.
We have a tutorial on how to use Ring Doorbell without a subscription if you are someone who is concerned about getting your money’s worth from your Ring doorbell.
Using Alexa for Visitor Announcements Through Echo Device For Ring Video Doorbell
Amazon bought Ring a few years ago if you haven’t heard. As a result of this purchase, Alexa now works with all Ring devices, including the Ring Video doorbell.
You can now ask Alexa to notify you when someone rings your doorbell or send you an announcement if your doorbell detects activity in the frame via your Amazon Echo device.
Before utilizing Alexa to set up guest announcements, turn off your Echo device’s “Do Not Disturb” option.
In the Amazon Alexa app, make sure “Announcements” is enabled in the Device Settings for your Echo device.
- Tap on the ‘Devices’ option in the Amazon Alexa app at the bottom right of the screen.
- To see all of your devices, go to the All Devices tab and choose them.
- Ring the Doorbell by pressing the Ring Doorbell button.
- Activate “Doorbell Press” to notify you anytime a doorbell is rung.
- Alternatively, you may activate “Motion” and “Person” if you’d want to be alerted whenever someone enters the view of your Ring Doorbell camera’s field of view.
How to Install a Ring Doorbell Without Existing Doorbell?
- Place the Ring doorbell at a height that provides you a good field of vision, at least 4 feet above the ground. The Ring doorbell’s position may be adjusted using the level tool.
- Since there’s no existing doorbell, use the Ring video doorbell faceplate as a template to mark the four locations where screws will be inserted to attach it. At the same time, make a larger mark in the center of the wall where the cables for the Ring doorbell’s indoor power adapter will be routed.
- Use a tiny drill bit to make four holes in the specified locations for the screws. More holes need to be drilled so that you may take out the Ring doorbell adaptor cables. If you’re not mounting the Ring doorbell on brick, stucco, or concrete, you may skip using a drill.
- Use the screws and anchors that come with the Ring doorbell’s faceplate to secure it in place.
- Use the screws and anchors included in the package to attach the Ring doorbell’s faceplate.

Does Ring Doorbell Need to Be Hardwired?
Except for the Ring Doorbell Pro, none of the Ring Doorbell models need hardwiring.
You may completely depend on it to operate on batteries alone. To connect to a Chime, just attach the device and utilize Wi-Fi to connect.
You shouldn’t have to recharge the battery for six to twelve months.
If you get an additional battery, you can be sure that your front porch is constantly being watched, even if the power goes out.
Which Ring Doorbell Does Not Require Wiring?
They all include internal batteries that can keep them going for a long time, whether you’re using a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Ring Doorbell, a Video Doorbell 3, or a Video Doorbell 3.
This eliminates the need for hardwiring. The Ring Doorbell Pro, on the other hand, requires a permanent hardwire.
Does Ring Doorbell Need a Resistor?
If you’re connecting a Ring Doorbell straight to an 8-24V AC transformer, you’ll need a resistor.
There’s no other way to explain it than an ac transformer. It is not possible to use DC transformers. If you’re thinking about it, you’ll need some experience with wiring and soldering.
Wiring a Ring Doorbell without a resistor may be a major fire danger, so be sure you have one that matches your electrical wiring.
It’d be simpler and more secure to employ an expert to handle it instead. This is a task best left to a certified electrician.
Optionally, you can power your Ring Doorbell with the included rechargeable battery.
Can Ring Doorbell Work with a Mechanical Chime?

Mechanical Chimes are compatible with the Ring Doorbell. The ring has a mechanical ring chime of its own.
Use any mechanical chime that’s compatible with your transformer’s voltage range of 8 to 24 volts.
To install the Mechanical Chime correctly, use the following wiring diagram.
Can you put a ring doorbell anywhere?
Ring Doorbells can be mounted almost anywhere, even on your front door, using the Universal Mount and a little elbow grease.
Does Ring Doorbell need Mains Power?
To be clear, the Ring Doorbell does not need mains electricity to function properly. You can replenish the internal battery in your Ring Doorbell so that it can operate completely on its own.
You won’t have to worry about changing out your battery in time to prevent downtime if you hook up your Ring Doorbell, as it will gently charge up your battery while you do so.
The fact that you can install it without having to worry about properly connecting everything to your current wiring is one of the things that makes the Ring Doorbell an attractive Video Doorbell to consider.
How To Wire Ring Doorbell To Light Switch?
It is not good to use a normal 120V light switch to power a Ring Doorbell since it is quite dangerous. To even consider installing a transformer inside an enclosure is a terrible idea.
Having an electrician install an electrical socket in the location where your light switch used to be and rewire it is an excellent option.
You may now hardwire your Ring Doorbell by utilizing an adaptor in the same manner as I explained previously in the post.
Because the wire just serves to charge the battery, and the ring relies on the battery to power the device, it is preferable to simply operate the Doorbell on its battery, maybe purchasing an additional battery to have on hand so that you never have downtime.
Final Thoughts
Ring Video Doorbells are often charged and mounted as a solution to this problem.
You don’t have to worry about constantly recharging your Ring video doorbell’s batteries thanks to its trickle charge.
If you had installed the Ring doorbell yourself, you would have saved a lot of money by not having to hire an electrician to hardwire it and install a doorbell transformer. As soon as everything has been set up, you’ll want to establish a connection with your new Ring Doorbell.
