As for access points/extenders, we like Netgear’s Nighthawk line; either the EX7300 AC2200 Tri-Band WiFi Range Extender or EX7700 AC2200 Tri-Band Mesh Extender would do nicely here (the latter is more expensive but also offers mesh functionality, which could come in handy if your home is particularly large or has thick walls). Once you’ve got your hardware squared away, it’s time to get down to business and start setting up your network! The process will vary slightly depending on which type of router you’re using, but we’ll outline the basics below:
If you’re using…Netgear: 1) Connect your main router to power and an Internet source ( modem, etc.), then log in to its web interface by typing its IP address into a browser window. Look for the “Setup Wizard” under “Advanced” settings; once you’ve found it, follow the prompts to configure your Internet connection.
When prompted, be sure to select “PPPoE” as your connection type. Once that’s done, open up a new browser tab and log in again, this time selecting “Wireless Settings” under “Advanced.” Find the section labeled “Wireless AP Mode”; set it to “Enable,” then click “Apply.” Now go back one page; under the same heading where it says SSID 1 / 2/ 3 / 4, enter a name for your new network next to whichever number isn’t already populated. For instance, if only SSID 1 already has a name next to it, use SSID 2 instead.
Make note of this name —you’ll need it later !—and scroll down until you see WPA – PSK / WPA2 – PSK Security Mode; set that value equal to AES Encryption. Now find Passphrase; enter any random string of characters here ( at least eight ), then click Apply again.
Your changes should now be saved!
